How this estimate works
Remediation is priced per square foot of affected material. Fixr's national cost guide puts the average at $10 to $30 per square foot, so the low and high figures are your area times those two rates.
The typical figure sits inside that range depending on where the mold is. Harder access and more containment push it higher: walls or a room sit at 40% of the way from low to high, a basement at 45%, an attic at 60%, a crawlspace at 65%, and HVAC or ductwork at 70%. Those placements are our judgment, not separate price data.
An inspection adds $300 to $1,075, the range HomeAdvisor reports for a professional mold inspection.
What the estimate leaves out
- Fixing the leak or moisture source, and drying wet materials first.
- Rebuild: new drywall, insulation, flooring, or paint after removal.
- Clearance testing by an independent assessor after the work.
- Lab fees for air or surface samples beyond the inspection.
- Minimum job charges, which many shops have for small areas.
How to measure the affected area
Add up every moldy or water-stained surface, not the floor area of the room. A wall 10 feet wide and 8 feet tall is 80 square feet. If growth runs behind drywall or under flooring, the real area is usually larger than what you can see, which is one reason an inspection comes before a firm price.

How much does mold remediation cost on average?
Fixr's national cost guide puts the average job at about $3,500, with most between $1,500 and $9,000, and $10 to $30 per square foot of affected material. Small contained areas cost less; whole-house jobs can run far higher.
Why is a crawlspace or attic more expensive per square foot?
Tight access, more containment, and more labor per square foot. The calculator places those locations higher in the published range for that reason.
Does insurance pay for mold remediation?
Usually only when the mold resulted from a covered sudden event, such as a burst pipe. Many policies exclude or cap mold otherwise. Check your own policy.
